Your breastfeeding journey is a significant aspect of early motherhood, and a lactation specialist can be a crucial ally in ensuring a positive experience.
Lactation education and assistance is included in our Global Midwifery care package.
If you are not a current Midwifery client, the standalone lactation service is perfect for you. The initial visit cost is $288 and includes telehealth follow-up. If additional visits are needed, the cost is reduced to $162 for each additional visit. We offer in-home lactation consults and consults in our office.
If you have had trouble with breast-feeding in the past, or our currently experiencing breast-feeding difficulties, make sure to check out the page on tongue and lip tie in infants.
Over the last 15 years, I have assisted well over 1000 mother-baby dyads on their breastfeeding and feeding journeys.
I have had partnerships with several infant tongue and lip tie laser revision dentists over the last 12 years. For the last decade I have been in partnership with a Cleveland area dentist that was a former homebirth dad of our practice. He is available to consult and revise if needed, in his Cleveland office and in the Ahava Midwifery Cuyahoga Falls office. In-home laser revision is available on a case-by-case basis.
Of course, tongue and lip tie are not the only reason that mothers and babies struggle with breastfeeding, bottle feeding and sleep.
As an experienced lactation specialist, I will perform a thorough exam and discuss all possibilities with you, formulating an individualized and specialized plan to improve your specific situation.
Here's a glimpse into what a lactation specialist such as myself does and when to consider seeking my guidance:
The American Academy of Pediatrics advocates for exclusive breastfeeding for the first 6 months, with continued breastfeeding until at least 2 years old.
Despite this, research shows that 60% of breastfeeding individuals in the United States stop earlier than intended.
Lactation specialists, as trained professionals, play a pivotal role in helping parents and babies overcome various breastfeeding challenges.
These challenges may include poor milk supply, breast pain, latching issues, finding comfortable nursing positions, refusal to feed, poor infant weight gain, falling asleep at the breast, problems with pumping breast milk, and engorgement.
Beyond addressing physical aspects, lactation specialists also provide essential emotional support during the ups and downs of the breastfeeding learning curve.
When to See a Lactation Specialist:
Women may seek the expertise of lactation consultants at different stages—during pregnancy, after delivery, and throughout their baby's breastfeeding journey.
The frequency of consultations varies based on individual needs, but studies highlight the positive impact on breastfeeding duration.
Before giving birth, attending prenatal breastfeeding classes led by a lactation specialist is recommended.
These classes cover topics such as how to breastfeed, recognizing hunger cues, expectations in the hospital and at home, ensuring an adequate milk supply, preventing common breastfeeding problems, seeking help when needed, managing breastfeeding while returning to work or school, introducing solid foods, breast milk storage, and the weaning process.
Empower yourself with knowledge and support by considering the guidance of a lactation specialist on your breastfeeding journey.
